Tongues of Fire

I just designed the logo and poster for famous Macedonian playwright Goran Stefanovski's new play, Ognjeni Jezici (ognjeni = fire, jezici = tongues) or Tongues of Fire.  The poster uses Cyrillic letters because Macedonians use Cyrillic in their writing. Most importantly, the play is also about the Cyrillic alphabet. More about the play in Goran's own words below.

"The play Tongues of Fire dramatizes the question of what is translation and whether it is at all possible?

The example of the brothers St. Cyril and Methodius tells us that it is. In the ninth century they translated the bible in the Slavic language and they invented the Cyrillic alphabet, which helped Christianize the Slavic world. For this they are known today as Apostles of the Slavs.

However they met fierce opposition by the Latin clergy, who put an end to their mission and ruined their lives. The brothers became martyrs of translation. This was the beginning of a war between the Cyrillic and the Latin worlds, between East and West, a war which is still going on to this day.

The story of the Tongues of Fire in the New Testament promises that translation and universal understanding are possible. This is in stark opposition to the story of the Tower of Babel in the Old Testament, which tells us that translation is impossible and that man is doomed to live in eternal  confusion and communication breakdown.

The theme of the play suggests that the devil makes a home in every bad translation and that it merrily resides there."

Goran Stefanovski, 2013

The play, directed by Slobodan Unkovski, opens on November 2, 2013 at the Drama Theater
of Skopje, Macedonia.

The purple text covering the entire poster is the complete script of the play in 7.4pt Macedonian Times. Detail of poster below.

JFF Festival of Tolerance in Sarajevo

The Festival of Tolerance will introduce a part of its film program of this year's, 7th edition to the audience in Sarajevo. Around fifteen films – feature, documentary and short – will be presented between October 25th and October 27th, 2013 at the Meeting Point cinema. Branko Lustig (two-time Oscar winner, Schindler's List and Gladiator), Honorary President of the Festival, will hold the Educational morning on tolerance and Holocaust, as a part of whichwe will present the feature film 'Wunderkinder' thattells a story of musically unusually talented children developing a deep and genuine friendship extending beyond their different religions and nationality.

The public in Sarajevo will also have an opportunity to visit the 'Antimasonic Posters' exhibition, which attracted great interest while presented in Zagreb and Tuzla. There will be seventeen posters from the original twenty in the show. These posters were created to announce the Nazi anti-masonic show in Belgrade in 1941. They were part of the German Nazi anti-masonic and anti-semitic propaganda.

This show is organized by Zagreb Jewish Film Festival, Galerija 11/07/95 and SOS Design Festival. The show opening is on October 24th at 7:30pm, at the Galerija 11/07/95. The show will be opened until November 4th.

The show and printing of the catalog and poster that I designed were made possible by generous donations from the AIC Foundation Inc.

Ristorante & Bar Del Lago at The Broadmoor

The Broadmoor Hotel is one of the oldest resort hotels in the US, dating back to 1891.
In November, they will start to undergo a $100 million renovation and expansion project.

Among one of the plans for the renovation is a
new Italian restaurant, Ristorante Del Lago, designed by renowned hospitality interior designer Adam Tihany. We are in the process of designing the visual identity for the restaurant and the bar,
two separate entities under the same roof.

Below are the logos for the restaurant and the bar. These were partially inspired by the old Broadmoor Hotel logo that can be seen at the end of the lawn at the driveway entrance.
In the past, we also designed other
restaurant identities inside the Broadmoor, including PLAY and Summit.
