The fifth edition of Typographic Design: Form and Communication
by Rob Carter, Ben Day, and Philip Meggs (it is extremely unusual that there is a fifth edition for books about graphic design) features two of our designs: our design for NY Times Arts and Leisure "The Year in Culture" and our spread from the Rizzoli book Elvis + Marilyn 2x Immortal. Typographic Design: Form and Communication is very informative and I highly recommend it.

Louis Silverstein

Yesterday I was saddened to find out Louis Silverstein had died. He was 92. Louis is known for his brilliant contributions to newspaper design. As a creative director of the New York Times, he gave many people the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. I was fortunate to have the privilege of working with him on creating department headings for Metro Plus, which he kindly included in his book "Newspaper Design For The Times" published in 1990 by Nostrand Reinhold. Steven Heller, another beneficiary of Louis' guidance, wrote a poignant post on the life of this influential man. Read the article here.

Ransom Note

Dallas Graham and I created this ransom note in hopes of getting some money back from
Wall Street (good luck!). The note is created out of bits of logos from different banks and
financial institutions.

Cetinje, Montenegro

On 9 December in Cetinje, Montenegro, I will be opening two shows: Milton Glaser's "Drawing is Thinking" and Penguin Books (U.S.) book cover show "Penguin 75." Also, on the same day, I will be introducing the documentary film about Milton Glaser "To Inform & Delight" directed by Wendy Keys. These events were organized by Ana Matic, professor at Faculty of Fine Arts Cetinje (she designed the poster below, too). See you there!

Stolen Artwork

An original piece of art "Training of Terrorists" by Mirko Ilic has been stolen from his retrospective exhibition "1975 – 2011: Comics, Illustration, Design, Multimedia" held in the gallery "Meander" of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina in Novi Sad, Serbia. The actual market value of the artwork is estimated to be 4000-5000 Euros. All the exhibits in Novi Sad are insured for 600 Euros per piece.

The local police department was immediately informed about the disappearance of the artwork and the investigation is in progress.

Mirko Ilic's exhibition opened on 25 October. It was visited by several thousands of people from Novi Sad and guests from other cities.

52nd October Salon Catalog

We recently designed the catalog of the 52nd October Salon. The theme of the show was "repetition" and "obeying." We used the theme of "repetition" by creating patterns of motion of the logo over photographs of landscape; to represent the theme of "obeying" we used red punctuation marks throughout the body copy of the catalog. See detail in last image.

Design of catalog: Mirko Ilic and Sandra Milanovic.
Photography: Mirko Ilic.

Participate

Helen Armstrong and Zvezdana Stojmirovic recently published a new book with
Princeton Architectural Press entitled "Participate."
The subject matter is quite interesting and provides a fresh approach about
designing with user-generated content. We are fortunate to have our identity for the
14th International Show of Drawings/Comics at the
Moderna Galerija / Museum of Modern Art included in this book.

The new Print Magazine "Regional Design Annual" just came out featuring an amazing
amount of good work — and I'm saying that despite the fact they only published one of ours:
The New York Times Arts & Leisure section.

Art Director: Jean Paul

Blast From the Past

Just recently I came across this video from C+C Music Factory "Everybody Dance Now." I had completely forgotten about it. It reminded me of their first CD, "Gonna Make You Sweat," and the logo I created for Sony Music with Nicky Lindeman in 1990.

Design by Nature

The new book Design by Nature, published by New Riders, features my design of the Op-Ed page of the New York Times, the logo for the Nadežda Petrović Memorial art show, as well as the poster for the Nadežda Petrović Memorial, which I designed with Aleksandar Maćašev.
